Don’t forget to #BYOBagNY

Starting the week of March 1, New York has become the third state to implement its ban on single-use plastic bags. Businesses will receive a fine if caught distributing the bags to consumers.

The state is hoping this will spawn a cultural shift and that carrying a reusable bag will become second nature.

In other countries and localities where single-use plastic bags are banned or provided for a small fee, there has been a significant reduction of plastic going into the waterways. California’s ban led to a 72% drop in plastic bag use. Considering that New Yorkers currently use 23 billion plastic bags each year, this ban could lead to a huge reduction in single-use plastic.

Next time you’re in New York, don’t forget to #BYOBagNY! Has your state or province banned single-use plastic bags yet?
